Signs of fleas in dogs and cats
Fleas are pests in every sense of the word! They are itchy, gross, and perhaps worst of all - prolific if not handled properly. One of the best ways to prevent this pest from entering your home and causing distress to your pet is to know the most common signs of fleas on dogs.
Signs of fleas in dogs and cats can be very obvious and sometimes also uncomfortable for the animal. Here is a list of signs that can indicate the presence of fleas:
1. Constant itching:
If your dog or cat is scratching themselves more than usual, it could be a sign that they have fleas.
2. Hair loss:
Fleas can cause hair loss in different areas of the body. You will notice bald areas or sparse fur.
3. Redness or inflammation of the skin:
Persistent itching can lead to redness or inflammation of the skin, including rashes or open sores.
4. Fleas or eggs:
Look for live fleas on the animal's body or eggs/spores that can be found in the hair coat. Flea eggs are small, white and transparent.
5. Residues on the skin:
Look for dark residue (names) on the skin, which could be dead fleas or flea feces. These residues look like black dots.
6. Abnormal behavior:
Fleas can cause animals to behave differently, such as being more nervous or restless.
7. Itching in specific areas:
Fleas tend to concentrate in certain areas, such as around the ears, neck, and tail. If your animal itches more in these areas, this may be a clue.
8. Image of a flea:
If you were able to see a flea jumping on the dog or cat, it is a clear sign that they have a flea problem.
Treatment:
If you recognize signs of fleas, it is important to contact a veterinarian. Quick treatment can include anti-flea substances, as given by the veterinarian, and also treatment in the home environment such as washing beds or upholstery to prevent the fleas from returning.
